It helps to include your display name, your phone model, and a challenge code if your question is about a challenge.

Common questions

How do challenge codes work?

Tap Play a Friend on the home screen to open the Challenge Arena (it unlocks at level 5), then send a challenge. You play a puzzle first, and the app gives you a six-character code (letters and numbers, like K7M2QX) and a link to share however you like.

Your friend opens the link, or types the code in the app: Have a challenge code? Enter it on the home screen the first time, or Enter a code in the Challenge Arena. They play the very same puzzle.

Whoever finds every word wins, and the faster finisher wins between two finishers. Bonus words take a few seconds off your time and each hint letter adds some. A code can be used by one friend and works for 7 days.

How do live matches work?

Live matches let you race a friend on the same puzzle at the same time. Anyone you've finished a challenge with shows up in the Live match card in the Challenge Arena.

  • Turn on Open to challenges so friends can invite you. It switches itself off after 15 minutes away from the app.
  • Tap Play next to a friend who's available to send an invite. They have two minutes to accept.
  • Once you're both ready, a short countdown starts and you both play against the clock.

Invites show up while you have Lotus Letters open: the app doesn't send push notifications for now. Live matches need a steady internet connection on both phones.

I tapped a challenge link and the app didn't open

No problem: the code still works.

  1. Make sure Lotus Letters is installed and up to date.
  2. On the challenge web page, tap Open in Lotus Letters.
  3. If that doesn't work, open the app yourself and type the code from the page or message. On the very first launch, the app shows you a short tutorial before you can play a challenge.

Some apps open links in their own built-in browser. If you see that, choose Open in browser or Open in Chrome from the menu and try again.

To make links always open the app: on your phone, go to Settings > Apps > Lotus Letters > Open by default and turn on Open supported links. (The exact names vary a little between phones.)

How do I change the sound and music?

Tap Settings on the home screen, or the speaker button while you play. You can:

  • Turn Music on or off and set the music volume
  • Turn Sound effects on or off
  • Choose a Sound style: Jackpot (bright and celebratory) or Calm (soft and gentle)

Still no sound? Check your phone's media volume (not just the ringer volume) and make sure it isn't on silent or Do Not Disturb.

Will I lose my progress if I change phones?

Your solo progress, coins and settings are saved only on your phone. There's no account, so they don't move to a new phone, and uninstalling the app or clearing its storage resets them.

Someone's name is offensive, or I don't want to play them

You can report their name or block them. After a match, tap Report name or Block on the results screen, under Back to Arena. Or, in the Challenge Arena, tap ⋯ next to their name in the Live match card.

  • Report name sends us the name to review. If it breaks our community rules, we may remove it.
  • Block stops live match invites between you, and takes you both out of each other's friends list.

They aren't told either way. There's no unblock button yet: email us if you'd like to undo a block.

Does the app send notifications?

Not for now. The app doesn't ask for permission to send notifications, and a friend's live match invite only shows up while you have Lotus Letters open. To stop live invites altogether, turn off Open to challenges in the Challenge Arena.

The one exception is a reminder during a live match, if you leave the app mid-round. It only appears if notifications are allowed for Lotus Letters in your phone's Settings > Apps > Lotus Letters > Notifications, and you can turn them off there.

How do I delete my data?

In the app: tap Settings on the home screen, then Delete my challenge data. It removes your challenges, matches, record, friends list and display name from our server straight away. Your levels, coins and settings on your phone stay.

If you've reinstalled the app or played on another phone, email us with your display name instead. See Delete your data for the details.

Read our privacy policy to see exactly what the app stores.
